After reading Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, my expectations were lower for this book. It was a very good book and worlds above EPL. The main characters were well drawn and interesting. I immediately got sucked into the fascinating world of Henry Whittaker and we followed his family through the next century ending with his daughter Alma as an old woman.
Her research was well done as she takes us on a journey into the age where new questions were being asked about science and religion. I found it difficult to put down. My daughter, Amy, read the book at the same time so we could discuss it together. Last year we started our 'dead' book club (with the idea to do it before one of us was dying). Every month or so we choose a book to read at the same time. It's great fun and I always end up with a new way of looking at what I've read after listening to her.
