The Great Camping Adventure - Day 1

Yesterday we said our goodbyes to the twins and their parents.
This morning we closed up the trailer and headed down the road. Or should I say up the road as we were traveling north on AZ 87 towards Winslow.  Interesting ride as the scenery changed from a landscape filled with saguaros to massive ponderosa pines.  Then again scrubs and finally desert like conditions all within a couple of hours.

While we were one of a few cars going north, the southbound lane of the two-lane highway was bumper to bumper.  As we suspected, I 40 going west out of Winslow to Flagstaff was closed due to blowing dust.  Fortunately we were headed East.  Only one problem, the wind kept blowing.  By the time we pulled into the KOA at Holbrook which was our first stop, I could barely walk in the wind.  The thought of trying to put up a tent, much less sleep in one, was definitely out of the question.  Fortunately this KOA has cabins so we upgraded our camping spot for a cabin.

Pluses include electricity, heating and air-conditioning.  So much for roughing it on our first night on the road.  We'll try out the tent tomorrow night..........  maybe.    They say that they haven't had this much wind here in years.  Since the owners provide a nice little supper (for a small price) with seating in an outdoor area, they are quite concerned about the wind.

We were eager to try out our new air mattress so have blown it up and put it on top of their tiny mattress.  We will sleep about 3 feet off the ground.  Was marvelous for an afternoon nap.  However it may be a bit tricky for that middle of the night trip to the bathroom (which is located in another building).

About Me

We retired after years of being in the computer support business, Jane with Brulin Corp and John with Unisys. We tried tent camping but finally settled on RV living. While we are part timers now, we hope to move to becoming full-timers eventually. John works on his HO model of Ellis, KS UP railroad and Jane persues her search for used books to read and sell on Amazon. We winter in Apache Junction, AZ and summer in Indiana.
