I have started on my project to read all the Booker prize winners in order. Thanks to my daughter Amy, I have them all in my possession. It is awarded each year to the best fiction of the year and began in 1969.
I don't know what the competition was in 1969 but P. H. Newby's book Something to Answer For is an excellent book. While the main character is not someone you would want to emulate, he is interesting. After fleeing England to escape the fact that he has embezzled money from the foundation where he works, he then tries to persuade a widow in Egypt to turn over all her money to him. He gets hit over the head when arriving in Egypt and after that has trouble knowing what is fact and what is fantasy. This reader also got confused at times. I did enjoy Newby's wit and writing style.
I thought it interesting that the book was written against the backdrop of the Suez canal crisis with the unrest and fighting going on and as I finished it there is again unrest and fighting going on in Egypt.
